An experimental build of the PlayStation 5 emulator KytyPS5 has managed to run the native PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V (build PPSA04264) at between 40 and 60 frames per second during the game's opening bank robbery mission in North Yankton. The result circulated through footage shared by developers on X marks the furthest KytyPS5 has pushed a major commercial PS5 title into actual gameplay, rather than just menus or loading screens.

The milestone matters beyond the emulation community's own circles. We reported last week that Grand Theft Auto VI will ship at 30 frames per second on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S when it launches on November 19, 2026, and that a possible delay to the PlayStation 6 could leave console players locked into that frame rate for years. With Rockstar yet to confirm any PC version of GTA VI, let alone a release date, the pace at which hobbyist developers are cracking PS5 emulation has taken on added significance. If a functional emulator can boot and run PS5 exclusives before Rockstar ships an official PC port, PC players could theoretically get a taste of GTA VI, at whatever frame rate the hardware allows, without waiting for Rockstar's usual year-plus PC delay.

What Actually Happened With GTA V

KytyPS5 is a free, open source, Windows only compatibility layer that first booted GTA V as far as its menu screen in July 2026. Two months later, forks and experimental builds of the emulator progressed to running the prologue mission itself, the bank heist that opens the campaign, at frame rates fluctuating between 40 and 60 depending on on screen activity, according to footage reviewed by Tom's Hardware.

The demonstration is not without problems. In the same test run, the game reliably crashes the moment the vault's security shutter opens to reveal the police standoff outside, cutting the playable segment short before the mission's climax. A separate tester who bypassed the prologue entirely and loaded directly into the open world reported performance dropping below 15 FPS, before climbing back into the mid-40s during the real time Franklin and Lamar cutscene, only for the emulator to crash again immediately after the scene ended. Because GTA V renders its cutscenes using the live game engine rather than pre-rendered video, even a brief, stable run of that sequence represents a meaningful technical result rather than a scripted showcase.

Reaching these frame rates required substantial hardware. The footage that produced the 40 to 60 FPS prologue run came from a system built around an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D paired with a Radeon RX 7900 XT, while a separate test used an RTX 5080 alongside a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Both configurations sit well above what most PC gamers currently own, underscoring that KytyPS5 remains a proof of concept rather than something approaching a consumer ready tool.

Simpler Titles Are Already Stable

While GTA V remains unstable past its opening minutes, KytyPS5 has quietly reached locked 60 FPS performance on several lighter PS5 titles. According to testing cited by Tom's Hardware and corroborated by regional outlets including Sector.sk and ShiftDelete.Net, the emulator now runs PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life at a stable 60 FPS. Tom's Hardware's own hands on test of PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC reportedly held a locked 60 FPS even on more modest hardware, a Radeon RX 6700 XT paired with a Ryzen 7 7700X, suggesting the emulator's core rendering path is maturing faster for less demanding engines than it is for the open world simulation GTA V requires.

A Rival Project Takes a Different Route

KytyPS5 is not the only PS5 emulation effort making headlines. SharpEmu, a separate open source project written in C# with native support for Windows, Linux, and macOS, is pursuing architectural accuracy and low level compatibility rather than chasing frame rates in specific commercial games. In August, a SharpEmu build booted Astro's Playroom, the PS5's pack in showcase title, directly on a Steam Deck running SteamOS, reaching the PlayStation Studios loading screen before performance settled at roughly 0.5 to 1 FPS. The demonstration was not intended to prove playability. It confirmed that a PS5 title's boot sequence, libraries, and initial video output could be processed on Linux based, non Windows hardware, a capability KytyPS5 does not currently offer.

The two projects reflect different bets on where PS5 emulation needs to mature first. KytyPS5's approach, described by its developers as game by game optimization, produces faster, more visible wins on individual titles but risks fragility when a new game exposes an unhandled code path. SharpEmu's infrastructure first approach is slower to produce a headline grabbing frame rate but aims to build a foundation that generalizes across more of the PS5 library, including on platforms beyond Windows.

Why the Timing Lines Up With GTA VI

Grand Theft Auto V already has an official, native PC version, released in 2015 and still receiving updates as Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced. Emulating its PS5 build has no practical benefit for anyone who simply wants to play the game on PC. What it offers instead is a benchmark: a way to measure how close current emulation technology sits to handling one of Rockstar's open world engines under real conditions, ahead of a title that will not have any PC version, official or otherwise, for a long time.

Rockstar's PC ports have historically arrived well over a year after console launch. Grand Theft Auto V took roughly eighteen months to reach PC following its 2013 console debut. If Grand Theft Auto VI follows a similar timeline after its November 2026 console launch, a PC release would land sometime in 2027 or 2028, roughly in line with, or possibly ahead of, a PlayStation 6 that Bloomberg has reported could slip to 2028 or 2029 because of a global memory chip shortage. The overlap between that PC port timeline and Sony's own hardware uncertainty is precisely why unofficial emulation progress has drawn outsized attention this year.

None of this means a playable, PC based GTA VI is close. GTA V, an eleven year old game with a decade of prior reverse engineering work behind it from the long running RPCS3 and other PS3 and PS4 emulation projects, still crashes minutes into KytyPS5's best runs. GTA VI is a substantially larger, more complex title built for hardware neither KytyPS5 nor SharpEmu can yet fully emulate. What the current pace of progress does establish is that the gap between an official Rockstar PC port and an unofficial, emulated version of a PS5 exclusive is narrowing faster than it has for any prior console generation, and that the people working on it are doing so with Grand Theft Auto VI, not Grand Theft Auto V, as the actual target.
